John Cartwright

John Cartwright was born in 1950 in Leeds, England. He immigrated to Australia with his family as a child and settled in Western Australia.

John is a self taught Artist with an individualist approach to his art. He has developed his own technique of incising the paint surface to give line and form together with gently washed colours which succeed in producing some unique effects.

He has experimented extensively with this method to create his individual style. His subject matter is predominately the landscape of the South West of Western Australia with emphasis on the houses, trees and surrounding bushland.

John is a very spiritual person and his painting can be seen to show mans life from the earthly tenuous hold symbolised by twisting pathways, cottages and trees holding to the Earth and reaching up through lifes journey to the celestial.

The paraphernalia of the bush cottages, the water tanks, abandoned cartwheels, the farm animals and domestic pets appear often providing a whimsical aspect to his works.

John has painted full time since the mid 1970’s and has exhibited in every Australian capital city with critical acclaim. tvh Gallery proudly continues an ongoing representation within NSW.

John’s work appeals on to different levels, for some its simplistic innocence is sufficient reward whilst for others there is the Artist’s philosophy to ponder on. Whatever the motivation, a ‘Cartwright’ has become a major feature in many corporate and private collections and are a treasured possession in many homes. His style is instantly recognizable to most Gallery goers in Australia.
